Salt Basics

Salt is something that we all need to have in our lives. You will often hear people talk about the importance of salt in their diet, but did you know that salt actually has many more uses than just seasoning our meals? Salt actually has more health benefits than most people realize. One of those benefits is lowering blood pressure.

The most common salt you will find in most restaurants is table salt. This salt tends to be highly processed, which means that most of its trace minerals and other impurities have been removed. The problem with highly processed salt is that over time, it tends to clump together with other particles in your stomach. This forces the sodium and potassium in your blood to be moving out into your urine, causing high levels of salt in your body. In order to keep your blood pressure lower, experiment with either a natural salt such as sea salt or a salt substitute such as rock salt by mixing a pinch of natural salt with a glass of water and drinking it.

Sea salt contains many different types of minerals, including magnesium, potassium and calcium. Magnesium and Calcium are both essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth, but because sea salt contains a lot of sodium, it is good to replace the salt on your menu with a natural sea salt instead. Some of the minerals found in sea salt include magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. Each of these minerals has different effects on different types of health. For example, magnesium chloride helps to reduce muscle cramps, whereas potassium chloride raises your energy level.
